Governor George E. Pataki Demonstrates Unwavering Commitment to the Revitalization of Lower Manhattan: World Trade Center Site Moves From Paper to Steel on July 4th When Ground is Broken for the Freedom Tower.

Speaking at an Association for a Better New York luncheon at the Ritz Carlton in Battery Park City, New York State Governor George E. Pataki reaffirmed the successful rebuilding of Lower Manhattan by announcing July 4th as the groundbreaking for the 1776 foot Freedom Tower. Originally conceived by Daniel Libeskind and designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill architect David Childs, the soon-to-be tallest building in the world will have its first stone laid in its permanent home less than three years after the September 11th Attacks.

"On July 4th, as we celebrate the birth of our democracy, we also celebrate the rebirth of our City," Governor Pataki said. "On July 4th, as we commemorate the founding of our nation, we lay the foundation for our resurgence. On July 4th, as fireworks burst in the sky, ephemeral reminders of our liberty, we will begin to reclaim our skyline with a permanent symbol of our freedom. On July 4 th, 2004 we will break ground on the Freedom Tower - I hope you will join me that day - as together, with unstoppable resolve, we rise to reaffirm our freedom." More »

The design of the Freedom Tower proposes an innovative mix of architectural, structural, and mechanical systems. The building will contain approximately 2,600,000 square feet of office space throughout 60 stories. Two concourse levels will house retail facilities and offer connections to transit hubs, while the top of the building will be home to rooftop restaurants and a public observation deck. The base of the building will also contain public lobbies for visitors and other lobby areas for the building's businesses. Clad in shimmering glass and affording spectacular views, the Freedom Tower will reclaim the New York Skyline and pave the way for a new 21st century Lower Manhattan. More » Video »
